Prawns are undoubtedly a very popular shellfish and these crustaceans are considered a super-food. High in protein and low in calories and fat they are one of the recommended foods by the British Heart Foundation. They are also rich in vitamin E (containing 22x more of this antioxidant than chicken or beef) and the B Group of Vitamins so important to help maintain energy and healthy blood. They also contain lots of essential minerals including iodine, zinc and selenium which support our immune systems. They are very versatile, easy to cook and work brilliantly as the main protein in a huge range of delicious and healthy dishes. They can be steamed, boiled, baked, grilled or BBQ’d - the choice is yours. So there can be no doubt that Prawns are a fantastic shellfish, but there is a catch! Most Tiger Prawns sold in the UK, and indeed the world, are farmed in South East Asia, using techniques that are known to damage the surrounding wildlife environment, with working conditions that have been subject to heavy criticism. It is for these reasons and many more that we refuse to sell these prawns - if you want to learn more about that you can read our Blog! At Fish For Thought our coldwater prawns are from certified sustainable fisheries in the North Atlantic, where our carefully selected suppliers harvest, boil, peel, and individually fast freeze the prawns with a minimally protective ice layer. As a sustainable alternative to Farmed Imported Tiger Prawns, we have at last discovered a superb wild red tiger prawn fishery in the cool waters of the South Atlantic. Well managed by the local fishing community, with no-catch zones in the spawning areas and quotas carefully controlled to ensure the sustainability of the species. When available we also source from some true innovators who are farming King Prawns in the UK. This is an incredible development, and although not available right now, they should be back on soon, and this represents the very best of sustainable aquaculture. All of the coldwater and tiger prawns we offer are frozen and we also have some King Prawn dishes available from our seafood kitchen, including our hugely popular King Prawn Linguini. We are proud to be leading the way when it comes to sustainable prawns - order yours with confidence now and if you are buying them elsewhere or eating them in a restaurant always ask where they are from and how they were caught.
