Mussels have been eaten all around the European coastline for hundreds of years. They are members of the bivalve filter feeder family and are truly impressive filterers. An average mussel can pump and filter 50 litres of water per day.
Growing mussels on ropes was developed in Spain and the craggy inlets of Scotland. Recently Dave and Sue Hancock developed the technique in Cornwall and established the first Rope Grown mussel farm down here - look at the video to see Dave and Paul on the farm in St Austell Bay.
As well as producing fantastic mussels this method is totally sustainable and does no damage to the seabed - a wonderful example of best practice fishing that we wholeheartedly support.
