Buy Fresh Fish Online

FAQs

What is considered fresh fish?

We source our fresh fish directly from local boats and markets, and when we say fresh, we mean fresh! Operating at the heart of the fishing industry, with years of experience, we only buy the very best quality fish from selected and sustainable catch methods.

Our approach is in stark contrast to supermarkets. Their supply chain is long and convoluted, where fish is handled multiple times, and transported up and down the country (and often across the world) before it gets near a shelf.

Our fish is between 3, and depending on species and catch method, up to 10 days fresher than you will find in a supermarket.

We also will never offer previously frozen fish as fresh, a practice that is sadly too common in our industry.

Is it better to buy frozen or fresh fish?

At Fish for Thought we believe there is a place for both, but that it is crucial to be very clear on which product is which. We are not snobby about frozen fish, although we do feel that with certain species, like Lobster, Dover Sole and Turbot, fresh does have the edge.

Many species of fish and shellfish do freeze very well, provided they are fast frozen when they are still very fresh. When fish is frozen, the nutrients are locked in, so nothing is lost health-wise, and as long as the fish is frozen and defrosted with care there is usually minimal impact on taste and texture.

Having a supply of frozen fish available does also offer real convenience, indeed a number of our Seafood Kitchen Range are provided in a cook from frozen format.

Is frozen fish fresh?

Simply put - no it isn’t. It is however important that when fish is offered frozen, it has been done as soon after landing as possible and quickly.

It is aso important to ensure that any fish that is kept in the freezer is completely covered and sealed to avoid freezer burn which will ruin it.

Here at Fish for Thought we expertly prepare, seal and blast freeze, here on site.

How long does fresh fish last in the fridge?

This does depend on the species, with oily fish like mackerel and sardines having a shorter shelf-life.

Other species from day boats can last for up to 8 - 10 days if it is properly looked after at every stage of its journey from sea to plate. We give our fresh fish a shelf-life of x days and recommend you eat it within that time.

If you are planning to freeze it, best to do so quickly, ensuring it is fully sealed.
