Provenance and Sustainability of Ray Wings

Currently Unsustainable and So We Do Not Offer for Sale

As part of our product review, we have identified that all forms of skate & ray are highlighted as ‘Fish to Avoid’ by both the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide and the Marine Conservation Society.

Both bodies use a cumulative scoring system for locally landed fish, and both rate these species at ‘5’, with stocks at historically low levels.

They are a slow growing species that produce a limited number of eggs each year, making them vulnerable to overfishing. Their unusual shape also means that they are more likely to be caught as ‘by-catch’ of certain fishing methods targeting other species.

It is for these reasons that we have decided to remove this species from our shop, to give stocks a better chance of recovery.

We do offer a huge range of alternative, sustainable fresh fish that you can order here
