Sustainable Turbot

Turbot is fished for along the south west coast and landed to all of the main markets, including Brixham, Plymouth and Newlyn. The techniques used to catch Turbot include: gill-netting; demersal trawling and beam trawling. Landings into Cornish ports have reduced over recent years, although this could be down to the reduction in fleet size. More information is required about this highly valued fish before we can be certain that current levels are sustainable, which is why it is not currently in the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide. We only recommend it as an occasional treat, and a great alternative that definitely is sustainable, is Brill.
