Sustainable Brill

Brill is fished for along the south west coast and landed to all of the main markets, including Brixham, Plymouth and Newlyn. The techniques used to catch Brill include: gill-netting; demersal trawling and beam trawling. Landings of Brill have remained stable over the past two decades. Brill benefit from being faster growing than other flat fish species, making them less vulnerable to over-fishing, and the Cornish fleet have a minimum landing size of 30cm for Brill. It is for these reasons that Brill is on the 'Recommended' List for The Cornwall Good Seafood Guide.
